Who
The Selection Committee for the 2001 Canada Games included a cross-section
of leaders from the Canada's political, cultural and athletic spheres.
What
The City of London's formal bid package included a multimedia CD presentation.
The CD showed that, as well as providing competitive facilities for the
athletes, London offers the enthusiasm of its people to support the Games
and ensure a successful event.
Why
Organizers believed that most cities would be able to satisfy the Committee's
nominal requirements for hosting the games. The recent success of the
Ontario Games in London was notable for the excellent turnout of volunteers
to staff the events and assist the athletes. This show of spirit was developed
as the city's promise to the Canada Games.
Results:
The "spirit" theme was adopted by the city's bid organization
and gained momentum throughout the community. London won the bid in a
close competition with Ottawa and Niagara Falls. In its decision, the
Selection Committee cited the visible support and spirit of the people
of London as the deciding factor.
